The
Apostolic Visit of Pope Francis to the Philippines will have for its theme
“Mercy and Compassion”. Pope Francis will visit the Philippines primarily to
comfort Filipinos devastated by the typhoon and the earthquake that hit the
Visayas. In fact, one of his itineraries is to eat with the people affected by
such calamities.
As
for me, the visit of the Roman Pontiff really gives hope not just to the people
who were affected by the calamities but also to those who are experiencing
injustices, dehumanization and other events that push them to despair. It is
said that Papa Francisco is acting like Christ that is to live simply and
humbly. In that way, people in the Philippines who will be encountering him is like
meeting the risen Lord. And so, the Hope will grow in every Filipinos’ hearts. With
that, Filipinos inspire to continue their doing good things in life. For instance,
a poor student would really study his lesson in spite of the scarcity of his
allowance. An unfortunate parents would take care of their siblings amidst of
poverty. And hopefully the presence of the Holy Father would lead them to
realize that what they do is for God’s glory and for their own salvation.
The
Papal Visit is not an ordinary visit. It is not like a president visiting to
the other country. But it is an appointment with Faith. Faith that gives us Hope, and
eventually teaches us to love. Love of Christ and to His people.
